My Professional Portrait

Hello!

Let me use this blog entry to properly introduce myself. My name is Matthew Irungu, and I am a sophomore at the University of Oklahoma. My major is public relations and I am working toward a minor in sports management.

As one could tell by looking around my site or other blogs, I am a big-time sports junkie. With that being said, I also love streaming shows and movies, writing, taking photos and designing. I've lived across the country, which has benefitted me when it comes to building relationships and communicating.

Throughout the school semester, I work part-time at Sarkeys Fitness Center as a facility attendant and as a student sports official in Intramural Sports. It's always fun to referee the sports you love, but it's also a treat seeing college kids attempt to do well in them.

Primarily, I really wanted to study in a field where I can showcase my love for sports and entertainment but also build relationships with people. That's where public relations stepped in. It provided me with a career path where I could exhibit both of those strengths.

Becoming involved in PR

What I love about public relations is its element of building healthy relationships but also how dynamic it is. Having to continuously maintain communication with the masses in a manner that is beneficial for both sides always intrigued me. In addition, I love how public relations is present in practically every organization or company, no matter what kind it may be. Nothing can really operate without some format of public relations being involved.

On campus, I try and attend any OU PRSSA meetings or events that I can. As far as community service, I am a member of OU's Alpha Lambda Delta chapter. As an honor society focused on academic excellence, they're constantly hosting service opportunities.

I'd say my main qualifications in public relations are being able to network and build relationships, written communication skills, problem-solving and brainstorming.

My motivations in public relations for the future are to continue building my skill set as a practitioner, expand my network and help any company or organization I work with succeed and prosper. I'm still really young, but the idea of working with an NBA or NFL team in the public relations department gets me super excited, so that's most likely where I would want to end up.
